About this Course

Emerging communicators with complex communication needs often rely on non-verbal signals-such as body movements, gestures and challenging behavior to express their wants, needs, and ideas.  These signals can be recognized, responded to, and shaped by partners and therefore, set the stage for powerful communication learning opportunities.  By allowing the child to “start the conversation”, these Magic Moments are the best moments to apply effective language instruction strategies, including AAC. Let’s explore some tips to help us recognize our student’s attempts to communicate and to capitalize on these wonderful opportunities by scaffolding language and communication skills! Handouts and resources accompany this video course.

Learning Objectives
  • Briefly explore the research basis for child-led communication interactions, the principle of multimodal communication, and signal shaping.
  • Identify at least three strategies to help you recognize communicative signals and respond to signals in a manner that supports ongoing interaction and language learning.
